When you have an address in Denmark and are registered in the Danish national register, you have the possibility to receive publicly subsidized child care for your children.
The municipality pays all the property costs and 75% of the remaining costs. This rule applies to the care of children from the age of 0-6 years old (school start). Payments due from parents are charged once per month. A sibling discount is available, that is to say, you pay full price for the most expensive form of care and half price for your other children.
Free place for child care
You can receive an economic free place. This means that the payments made by parents are reduced by a percentage if the accumulated income in their household is below a certain limit. This limit is fixed for each year and you can obtain from 5-100% “discount” – all based on income. Further information about economic free places can be obtained from the Citizen Services Office.

Children with special needs
If particular health or social conditions exist, social pedagogical free places are granted by the head of the institution. Social pedagogical free places are granted for a limited period, but can be extended if the child’s health or social conditions remain unchanged. Upon granting of a social pedagogical free place, a written agreement is entered into between the institution and the parents as to which efforts the institute and the parents shall make in relation to the child.
Care in other municipalities
If you have obtained a place in an institution in another municipality, the municipality of residence contributes towards the payments made by the parents for the care. This contribution can never exceed the net amount that it costs the municipality to care for the child in their “own municipality”. Furthermore, if the municipality that provides the care has a cheaper running cost, the most you can receive in contribution is an amount which corresponds to the running costs of the municipality providing the care.
