School

In Denmark, enrolment in school is not compulsory but it is compulsory for all children to receive education.

Normally, this also applies to foreign children who live in the country for 6 months or more.  Compulsory education means that the child shall participate in lessons that are set to a level corresponding to the level ordinarily required in a primary and lower secondary school (folkeskole).
Compulsory education lasts for 9 years and comes into force in August of the year when the child reaches 7 years of age. However, the commencement of education can be postponed in consideration of the child’s development.

Registration
The district school sends an enrolment form to all the homes that have children who should be attending school. All the parents are requested to deliver the form back to the district school within the date stated on the form with the enrolment information or a request for another form of school.
If parents have not received an enrolment form, they can contact a primary and lower secondary school (folkeskole) or the Citizen Services Centre to receive a form.
Information about the school districts can be obtained on the municipality’s website or from a primary and lower secondary school (folkeskole) or the Citizen Services Centre.

Preschool class
Preschool is an optional offer for pupils and not a part of the compulsory education.   If it is the parents´ wish, their child can be enrolled in a preschool class in the calendar year when the child turns 6 years old.  Children turning 5 years old before October 1 in the same year can be enrolled in a preschool class, if they can follow the lessons in the first class in the following year. The school evaluates and determines, if the child can be enrolled.
Children who already attend a preschool class are regarded as registered for the first class in the following year.

First class
Compulsory education applies from the calendar year when the child turns 7 years old. However, the child can already start in the first class in the year when child turns 6 years old. This requires though that the child’s birthday falls on a date before October 1 and that the child can follow the lessons. The school evaluates and determines, if the child can be enrolled.

After–school care scheme (SFO – Skole fritidsordning)
SFO is an after-school care offer for children attending school. The care takes place at the school after the last lesson. SFO schemes are available at all schools. Contact your child’s school for more information about the after-school care scheme.
